Lowering the consumption of tobacco is the key to closing the life expectancy gap of Indigenous Australians. The targets that have been set are ambitious. We need to see innovative methods of communicating the 'Say No To Smokes' message. There must be a whole range of strategies in prevention and health promotion, not just treatment and medical models.

Funny to comment on my own post, but here goes. Early in 2010 the Commonwealth committed $100 million over then next four years to 'Tackling Indigenous Smoking' and subsequently appointed former Human Rights Commissioner, Tom Calma as the National Coordinator of 'Tackling Indigenous Smoking'.
It's scary when you think that 50% of Aboriginal people smoke and that one in two long term smokers die early because of their smoking. Go figure, if you think driving down Aboriginal smoking is not one of the keys to the 'Close the Gap' campaign. Alternatively, BTW recently published research shows that in Smoking caused an
estimated 20% of all Indigenous deaths
nationally in 2003.
